Review | Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual

Bobbi Brown is a well-known makeup artist who popularized the all-American natural beauty look. She has written several books including the Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual (2008), which is written for everyone from beginners to pros.

I read the book voraciously when I received it on Christmas. Bobbi covers a wide variety of topics - from skincare, step-by-step makeup looks, makeup bag necessities, information on working in the industry, and so much more. Bobbi's M.O. of using makeup to enhance natural beauty is prevalent in her writing, but she still discusses how to create "glam eyes", for example.

One of my favourite sections is Bobbi's tips on how to enhance, not mask, diverse skin tones and types. She also covers the best ways to do eyeliner on different eye shapes. I love doing makeup on friends and I'll keep her tips in mind.

Another thing I love about the book is that while Bobbi shows her products in use, she doesn't specifically promote them. For example, she describes what is good to have in a small day makeup bag and in a professional makeup kit, but she isn't saying you specifically need my cosmetics. I like that the book doesn't read like one big ad.

Doesn't this photo just make you drool? Just me?

This really is the "ultimate makeup textbook" and I already count it as a great resource. I'd love to hear your recommendations for other beauty books I should read - already have my eye on Kevyn Aucoin's "Making Faces". Expect more reviews soon.

What have you tried from Bobbi Brown? Would you read her book?
